[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to say this, not that, and the word I'm going to remove from your leadership vocabulary is. Opportunity.
I'm Jennifer Thornton, the founder and CEO of 304 Coaching. And I have said the word opportunity one too many times in my professional life. I have said that as a leader, I've said that as an HR professional, and I've even said it early days as a coach. But what I now know is it's not that we have opportunities.
Typically what's happening is we have a strength that's amazing and it's what makes us powerful and great, but what we're not great at is situationally managing it, turning it up, turning it down, learning how to pivot that strength so that it doesn't [00:01:00] create an opportunity. So here's what I want you to think about the next time you're thinking about someone on your team and how to help them grow and develop.
I want you to think about what's their opportunity. Maybe that opportunity is that they are so enthusiastic about the brand and they have a lot of energy and they are fantastic in front of clients because of all this passion and great energy. But when they're working with peers, Their message gets kind of lost in the energy and it doesn't always seem authentic.
And so you may be saying to yourself, this person needs to dial it down. This person is wearing others out. This person is annoying like that. You may be thinking those are the opportunities and you may be thinking, how do I tell this person that their huge, amazing personality is getting on everyone's nerves in the office or that no one's listening to them because they're not.
being authentic. And that can be really scary as a leader to tell [00:02:00] someone that. But that's not what's going on. What is going on is that individual is fantastic at enthusiasm, energy, passion around the brand. They're probably incredible in front of your client. So what you need to talk about is here is what makes you a powerhouse.
And just like any powerhouse, you have to learn how to control that energy. Focus that energy, dial it up, dial it down, know your audience. So what I want you to think about is how much of that passion do you put into a sales call and ensure you're authentic? And then how do you think about adapting that energy and a room full of executives when you're trying to convey a new idea?
Because that same approach with your passion isn't going to work. We still want you to be you. We still want you to have passion. But what I want you to do is think about how to take that strength that you have and situationally manage it [00:03:00] across. Any situation that you're facing at work, that is something someone can do something with anytime you sit down and you tell someone everything that's wrong with them, they're going to overcorrect.
They're going to try to be someone they're not. And guess what? It never works. None of us. No one listening to this video, myself or anyone I know can be successful being someone that they are not. So again, I want you to stop thinking about opportunities and I want you to think about what's the actual opposite of that.
And that's actually probably a strength for that person. How do I teach them how to manage their strengths so that they show up? every day with their best foot forward and always being them. Do this for yourself. Do this for your team. I know it'll make a difference. If you have any questions, drop them in the chat below, and we can talk about it one on one.
Thank you. Have a great day.[00:04:00]
