0:01:23.6 S1: So what is today's special request topic? Well, it's how to work with a disappointing leader. I know we have all been there at least once. In our career, we've had a leader we were excited to work with, we hope we could learn, be exposed to their experiences, build a great partnership, but we were just disappointed in their leadership skills. Let's get the term disappointing leader, a working definition for our time together today. It can be someone who lacks vision, all to communicate effectively or struggles to inspire their team, it could also be a leader who doesn't take responsibility for their mistakes, exhibits poor decision-making skills, or fails to develop and support their team. At the end of the day, a disappointing leader fall short and one or more critical areas of leadership, if you are working with a disappointing leader, you have two options, mentally stay in reactive mode by judging, complaining and being critical. Oh, and by the way, the only person's career who is suffering in estate is yours, or you could be self-authoring, you can recognize this is just happening and it's not happening directly to you, it's not about you...
0:02:40.2 S1: This self-authoring mental state is all about keeping your power and not giving it up to someone else, so how do you stay in a self-authoring mindset and maintain your leadership during these times? Obviously, number one is it maintain professionalism and self-awareness, it starts with self-awareness, understand your own reactions and emotions to better manage your response, it's essential to maintain a professional demeanor and avoid letting frustration or disappointment cloud your judgment. Remember, you have the power to control your own behaviors and attitude, even in challenging circumstances, provide constructive feedback, seek opportunities to communicate openly and constructively with your leader, provide feedback that is solution-oriented and based on specific examples, remember it's about addressing the behavior, not attacking the person, focus on the impact of their actions on the team and the organization, be prepared to offer suggestions for improvement and offer support one needs...

0:04:11.0 S1: This is a great time to build a strong internal and external network, because when you have a strong internal and external network, you create an environment where you can learn from others and also share your own knowledge, it allows you to fill your cup outside of the relationship you have with your supervisor, having a trusted circle of peers can be incredibly rewarding in good times and obviously and more difficult times. Always focus on what you can control. It's common to focus on the factors outside of your control when working with a disappointing leader, instead focus on what you can control such as your own performance, the impact you have on your team and your relationships, lead by example and strive to create a positive work environment despite the challenges, and finally, seek professional development opportunities, no one can do your career push-ups for you, it is your responsibility to manage your own development, investing your growth, seek out mentorship or coaching opportunities to enhance your leadership skills and your resilience, taking a proactive step to improve yourself will not only benefit you in your current situation, but will also prepare you for future opportunities. Now, remember, when working with a disappointing leader, it can be challenging, but it doesn't have to define your experience or limit your potential, when you maintain a self-authoring mindset, you stay in control of your actions and your results, leaders, they come and they go, but your performance matters every single day, focus on self-authoring and the rest will work itself out.
